Frequently-Asked Questions

Hiker can be downloaded from http://www.hikerproject.org/downloads. This page contains common Hiker support queries and their answers.

  1. We cannot run hiker 0.9.1 - we get an error message "there is no openssl/sha.h" and cannot compile.

Section 4.4 in the white paper (in the tarball) addresses this. It explains that "you may need to install several open source components to build the Hiker code successfully". It goes on to explain how to detect and remedy this situation. OpenSSL is an requirement for the security module. (We shall add this info to the README). The build problem will most likely be solved by installing openssl in the development environment. They may find that there are a dozen open source components that also need to be installed to build hiker.

  2. What output should we get when running ver 0.9?

Don't use version 0.9. It has been completely replaced by version 0.9.1

The README file explains that you should run source /opt/alp/bin/setup.sh and then run the demo program, by running the script alp_demo_run.sh The demo program will then print a hello message to the screen. If you do "ps" at this point, you will see several ALP daemons are running.

  3. What output should we get when running apl_demo_run.sh?

The exact output is one line that says:

Running ALP open source middleware sample.

The output is not intended to be impressive. The idea is to look at the demo code and see what it does. The output just confirms it is running in the framework.

  4. What execution and compilation environment (Linux host machine) should we use?

The White Paper (included in the tar ball) describes this information in section 4.4. Compile and run on Ubuntu 5.10 on a PC.
